1. Inbound Sorting & Storage
Inbound logs delivered to our facility are tallied and graded immediately. A unique practice at our mill is the manner in which grade logs are stored. Grade logs, which will feed directly into our mill, are stored under sheds that protect from sun and weather damage. Not only do these sheds offer shade to the logs, the sheds are equipped with a sprinkler system that keeps logs “underwater” during the warmer months of the year.
2. The Sawmill

3. Headrig & Carriage
The headrig in the mill is a 6’ McDonough Band double cut head saw. The Cleerman carriage is set to a 17 degree slant allowing for logs to avoid unnecessary handling and abuse. The carriage is gentler on the logs which reduce potential “bruising” within the lumber. The headrig is also equipped with a stereo scan 3D optimizing scanner which aids in efficiency and yield
4. Band Re-Saw
The mill utilizes a 5’ McDonough band re-saw which is managed by two people- an operator and an inspector. The inspector will turn each squared-up log so he can look at all four faces to determine how best to maximize grade and yield. Thick cut stock to include 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4 and 12/4 is cut at the band re-saw as well.
5. Lineal Optimizing Board Edger
The lineal optimizing board edger was installed at the beginning of 2006. Past capital improvements to Devereaux Sawmill provided equipment that helped with optimum log recovery while increasing the speed of production. However, previously, all edging decisions on the actual boards were still made by a person. The edging equipment is teamed with the latest software/technology and reads each board to determine the best way to improve grade, while maximizing yield. The equipment produces a better overall manufactured board on the front end of the lumber manufacturing process.
6. Grading Station 1
The mill utilizes a 5’ McDonough band re-saw which is managed by two people- an operator and an inspector. The inspector will turn each squared-up log so he can look at all four faces to determine how best to maximize grade and yield. Thick cut stock to include 5/4, 6/4, 8/4, 10/4 and 12/4 is cut at the band re-saw as well.
