James (Jim) Devereaux was introduced to the hardwood lumber business by his father who was a farmer and operator of a small portable mill. In 1947, Jim and his two brothers partnered together to own and operate Oakley Hardwoods, a sawmill located in Oakley, Michigan. After working together for nearly 20 years with his brothers, in 1967, Jim decided to open his own mill, Devereaux Sawmill, in Pewamo, Michigan. Originally, the sawmill consisted of a circle mill that sold green lumber to wholesalers and concentration yards in Michigan. In 1976, Jim added the company’s first kilns as well as its first planing mill.
In 1978, Jim’s son, took over operation of the sawmill and remains active today. During his tenure, he broadened the original business with equipment additions, technological advancements, and facility expansions. his two sons, Brandon and Craig, have assumed leadership positions within the organization and have played integral roles in the company’s success.
Today, Devereaux Sawmill, Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers and distributors of quality Michigan Hardwoods.
