Navigating Timber Sales: A Guide to Selling Your Trees to Devereaux Sawmill
Devereaux Sawmill specializes in purchasing high-quality hardwoods and is your go-to timber buyer.
We prioritize species such as walnut, maple, oak, cherry, and hickory, offering top-dollar for your trees. Unsure of the species you have? No problem, identifying them is our expertise. However, please note that we cannot purchase trees from residential areas or yards requiring specialized equipment for removal. Additionally, trees damaged by weather, such as those blown down, do not meet our standards for high-quality hardwood. This underscores the importance of harvesting mature timber when considering a timber sale.
Questions to consider before selling your timber:
- Selling Obstacles: Clear ownership, agreement among owners, and trees within property lines are essential. Accessible landing areas for loading onto semis are crucial, avoiding obstructions like power lines, driveways, lawns, and septic systems.
- Tree Species: While we’re happy to identify species, certain species like dead ash, elm, cottonwood, pine, hackberry, black oak, basswood, or beech are considered low-value pallet wood and do not meet our criteria for high-quality hardwoods.
- Tree Size: Assess the diameter of your trees, as diameters smaller than 14″ yield lower value. If your woodlot primarily consists of trees under 13″, it may be advisable to allow them more time to grow since their value upon sawing is minimal.
- Land Characteristics: Evaluate if your trees primarily grow in low, wet areas. Such areas typically host lower quality species that we cannot purchase. However, if your land features both wet and dry areas with larger trees, there may still be valuable trees present.
- Quantity: Ensure there are enough trees of sufficient size to make it worthwhile for us to dispatch equipment and personnel. While we can combine loads from multiple woodlots, purchasing just one or two trees isn’t economically feasible.
In the world of timber sales, every woodlot is as unique as its owner’s vision. At the heart of it all, it’s your decision on how to manage your forest. From assessing tree sizes and species to navigating terrain and ownership logistics, the path to a successful timber sale is guided by your choices. Trust in your instincts and preferences as you embark on this journey—it’s your forest, your call.
